For Teachers - Humane education tool for the classroom

Years ago, humane educators spent their days walking into unfamiliar classrooms to impart a complicated message to a group of children they might never see again. But today, humane educators are working on a larger scale to equip classroom teachers with the tools and know-how to deliver humane messages to children throughout the entire year. Among these educators' most valuable resources is KIND News, a humane education newspaper produced by the National Association for Humane and Environmental Education, The HSUS's youth education division.

Each monthly issue of KIND News features articles, activities, and puzzles focusing on everything from wildlife and animal habitats to responsible pet care. Every page helps to instill a humane ethic while fostering young students' love of reading and improving their critical thinking skills. Humane agencies can contribute to this worthy effort by participating in the "Adopt-A-Teacher" program, which enables organizations to purchase subscriptions for school classrooms.

It costs only $25 a year to provide a classroom with 32 copies of KIND News each month, and the more classrooms adopted, the lower the price of each subscription. The HSUS even has ideas to help humane agencies and schools obtain funding for KIND News with the help of local parent-teacher associations and businesses.

If you are a teacher and would like to participate in this program, s
end your order to the National Association of Humane and Environmental Education, P.O. Box 362, East Haddam, CT 06423-0362, or visit www.kindnews.org, or call 860-434-8666 for more information.

(This information provided from "Animal Sheltering" magazine.)

If you would like to sponsor a teacher in our area, send your $25 sponsorship to ARF at the above address or use Paypal.  Let us know the name of the teacher you wish to sponsor with the name of the school.

ARF speaks to schools about pet care

ARF representatives and their 4-pawed friends are available to speak to students at area schools. If you are interested in scheduling a talk, please call ARF at 766-0991. We love to talk to kids and kids like to hear what we and our 4-pawed friends have to say! Topics will vary depending on the ages of children. We are confident early animal education can help resolve animal overpopulation in the future.
